Introduction:
Whether you’re starting a DIY campervan project or planning to work with professionals like Lomond Campers, it’s important to understand the process from start to finish.
Here’s a comprehensive guide to the five main stages of converting a van into a camper — based on our real-world experience building high-quality, bespoke vans every day.
Stage 1: Strip-Out and Preparation
Before anything is added, everything must come out. We remove:
- Bulkheads and seats
- Factory linings and flooring
- Any previous insulation or wiring
We then deep-clean the vehicle and prep all surfaces, including sealing rust spots and applying sound-deadening treatments. This stage is also when we add surface protection to prevent any damage during the build.
Stage 2: Insulation and Soundproofing
We use a two-stage insulation approach:
- Foil-backed foam insulation in all panels and cavities
- Thermal liner and vapour barrier to maximise warmth and prevent condensation
This ensures a quiet, comfortable living space that’s energy efficient year-round.
Stage 3: Electrics and Utilities
All wiring is planned, run, and installed before we fit ply and panels. This includes:
- LED lighting and switches
- 12V sockets and USB charging points
- Split charge systems
- Solar panel wiring
- Water pump and fridge connections
- Mains 240V hook-up
We protect all wiring with conduits and label every circuit for easier future maintenance.
Stage 4: Framework and Furniture Build
With the shell insulated and wired, we move on to:
- Ply lining and carpet finish
- Building cabinetry, beds, and storage units
- Mounting kitchen appliances
- Gas and water systems
- Fitting the rock and roll bed, seating and rails
Every piece is precision cut, securely fixed, and carefully finished to suit your layout.
Stage 5: Final Touches and Finishes
The final stage brings everything together:
- Floor and trims fitted
- Swivel bases installed
- Curtains or blinds
- Light switch panels and control units
- Decals, signage and certification stickers
- Full van clean inside and out
- Function testing: roof, heater, electrics, gas safety
Only once everything is tested, polished and signed off do we hand over the keys.
