Renault Trafic Camper Conversion: Progress Update and Full Build Process

At Lomond Campers, every campervan conversion is a story in the making — and our latest Renault Trafic build is already shaping up to be something special.

From the initial strip-out to fitting a premium Drivelodge pop-top roof, this van is undergoing a full transformation into a bespoke camper ready for adventure. Here’s a full update on where we’re at, what’s been done, and what’s coming next.

🔧 Stage 1: The Strip-Out – Back to Bare Metal

Every great build begins with a clean slate. We’ve stripped out the Renault Trafic completely, removing:

  • The bulkhead,
  • Old flooring,
  • Any previous panelling,
  • And all unnecessary interior fittings.

With everything cleared out, we’re able to properly assess the structure, plan wiring routes, and ensure that every stage of the build is executed with precision.

🧼 Stage 2: Pre-Conversion Prep

Before the first tool hits the van, we make sure everything is protected and prepared:

  • Full van wash, including the roof and door shuts (especially if it’s our own base vehicle).
  • Battery maintainer connected to keep systems stable throughout the build.
  • Seats removed and clearly ID-tagged for later reinstallation.
  • Internal coverings and protection put in place to guard painted surfaces during the fit-out.

🛠 Stage 3: Major Installations Now Complete

We’re already well into the main structural alterations:

  • The Drivelodge pop-top roof has now been cut and professionally installed, giving extra headroom and upper sleeping space.
  • Window cut-outs have been made, giving the van natural light and ventilation.
  • 240V hook-up cut-out installed for future mains power connection.
  • Bed kit rivnuts already pre-installed for efficient mounting once we’re ready to fit the frame.

The back of the van is now being framed out and prepped, and it’ll begin taking proper shape later today.

🧱 What’s Coming Next: Our Next Few Days on the Build

With the shell now prepped and structural elements installed, we’ll be pressing ahead with the next phase of this full conversion:

  • Full two-stage insulation, including all doors and cavities
  • Grey water outlet installed
  • All wiring run and fitted, including options such as lighting, switches, USB charging, and more
  • Rerouting of wiring where necessary for layout and safety
  • Ply lining fitted for a secure and clean internal surface
  • Carpet lining throughout, including ceiling and wall trims
  • B-pillars and cab finishings completed, including front switch panels
  • Door panels cleaned, modified, and refitted
  • LED downlights installed throughout
  • Bed system fully fitted
  • Window trims and curtains fitted to finish off the internal window units
